Welcome to Shepherd Volunteer Fire Dept.
In 1954, a small group of men met to discuss the formation of the Shepherd V. F. D. The group, composed of W. A. Elmore, Frank Baxter, Eddy LeMere, Bill Pilkington, John Beeson, and Joe Goffney decided to go to Houston to see if any equipment could be obtained from the Houston Fire Dept. at a small cost. The Houston officials very generously offered their support and knowledge. They also arranged for a fire fighting instructor to visit us and counsel us on the formation of the department. A surplus army tandem truck was purchased on Oct. 15, 1954 and was followed by a long period of gathering materials in many places so that the tank, connections, and the pump mount might be fabricated. In the meantime, raising funds to pay for the truck and equipment was of great importance. Non-interest shares were sold at $50.00 each. Although the organization was young and possibly uncertain, the community responded generously and a great deal of money was raised. After about five months of waiting on the completion of the truck, a demonstration was held. The truck held about 1500 gallons of water and was supplied with 1 1/2 inch hose and 1/2 inch hose.l The department still needed more equipment, and a building to house things in. An "Air Show" was planned and the event was very successful. The first equipment was paid for from the Air Show and a fire house was built, J. V. Thomas, Sr. was elected Fire Chief in April, 1956.
Now in 2009, we have multiple trucks, tankers, Jaws of Life tools, and an average of 30 members. Many changes have affected the department through the years. We have seen growth of the department, guidelines set down by state and federal laws, and requirements that we must fulfill. Our volunteers today are required to maintain their training and certifications. We offer local training and also participate in the Livingston Fire School annually. Our committment of providing safe and efficient fire service to our community will remain strong.
We also have a "Junior Dept." and a "Support Team". Call the station for more information @ 936-628-6566.
